Where Gable Slept Irene Bennett Brown 9780980155877 Books

I really enjoyed this novel and felt like I lived in the little Oregon town. The characters were interesting, not stereotypical and they develop as the novel unwinds this murder mystery. And there were suprises, too! This one is a great read when you just want to have fun and get immersed in people so well defined by the writert that you feel that you know them well.

Where Gable Slept Irene Bennett Brown 9780980155877 Books Reviews

Celia Landry is a great character. A widow who finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, it was a joy to read how she tries to figure it all out. Along the way, she meets a man who just might provide some romance for her.

This is a great, entertaining read!
Proud of her hometown's heritage, Celia Landrey is devastated to learn the historic house where Clark Gable once lived is planned for destruction. Her quest to save the town's most famous tourist attraction is not deterred by the murder of its owner, Otis Peek, nor strange and dangerous happenings to follow. Where Gable Slept keeps you turning pages to unravel this mystery right along-side Celia. A great read!
Where Gable Slept is an entertaining, fast-paced mystery with a blossoming romance. Celia Landrey leads tours through a historic mansion, where Clark Gable reportedly stayed, to attract tourism to her struggling community. The owner's death and the shadow of murder threatens to spoil its appeal. Then a mystery woman appears and buys the property out from under the town's preservation group, with plans to burn it down.
Celia is a well-characterized and sympathetic middle-aged sleuth, the storyline kept me turning pages, and I enjoyed the story very much.
Follow the Dream
even though I visited 3 times since downloading quite some time ago. It is what I would call a cute book - easy on the brain, chick lit, romantic in an incredibly frustrating way. I found myself mentally shouting "just do it already!" which is truly not my style. But goodness, does this book seem to drag. And there is so much oft repeated material! It seemed that the author wrote one or two chapters, then just repeated them continuously but in changing order of paragraphs. I am still at only 45%..... yet I read A Tale of Two Cities much, much faster! I want to love it but I just cannot...so I gave it 3 stars.
Irene Bennett Brown, well-known for her popular historical novels, has successfully crossed genres with this fun cozy mystery, Where Gable Slept. A gifted writer, she keeps readers turning the pages while trying to glean clues to solve the mystery.

Widowed Celia Landrey's beloved town, Pass Creek, Oregon, is her life. She thrives on its history and does everything within her power to breathe life into what some call a has-been town. But one thing after another threatens her tranquil community. The owner of the locally famous Gable House, where actor Clark Gable stayed as a young man, mysteriously dies. The house's new owner, a guest at Landrey's Inn, threatens to demolish it, which would create a huge historical gap in the town's tourism. One thing leads to another and Celia finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery, an arson, personal danger and, oh yes, romance with a handsome cowboy turned realtor.

While Celia digs herself deeper in a maze of clues, she manages to infuriate the local law authority, upsetting the on-going investigation as she puts herself in even more danger.

Where Gable Slept is the first of a series-I can hardly wait for the sequel!

Mary E. Trimble, [...]
Celia Landrey is a widow trying to organize a life for herself after 25 years of wonderful marriage. She and her husband had lived a full life in the small town of Pass Creek and she loved the history and ambiance of the eclectic houses and people. Celia had a particular passion for the house Clark Gable had once owned and lived in with Carole Lombard and she took pride in the tours she gave.

When the owner of the house's death is deemed a murder and a strange woman comes to town wanting to burn the house to the ground Celia fires up all her burners to figure out what is going on and what this woman is doing here in this town? She has lots of help from the residents of the town who like the way things are and the new real estate broker who is reminding her that being a widow does not mean forever living alone.

Celia finds herself in a bit of trouble on and off but nothing she cannot handle if everyone and his or her dang secrets would come out in the daylight. Celia wants to stir things up and get answers but not push someone to arson and that is when the madness really moves to the forefront.

This story had only one drawback for me and that was the lack of more romance between Jake and Celia, but that is the only problem. There is a murder mystery to solve, lots of secrets to unfold and quite a mess to unravel with lots of suspects and not enough answers.
